How To Become A Lash Tech In Texas

Lash extensions have become popular over the years, as they add volume, length, and thickness to your lashes! Because they have become so popular, the demand for lash technicians is growing. If you’re interested in pursuing a career as a lash tech, there are some things you should know. This guide will provide you with the necessary requirements to become a successful lash technician in Texas!

Complete A Lash Training Program

The first step to becoming a lash tech is to complete the right program. To qualify for a license in Texas, one must complete 320 hours of training in an approved program. At DFW Lash University, we offer all 320 hours needed to be eligible for licensure. Our Online Eyelash Extension Certification program takes either 12 or 6 weeks to complete. In this program, you can:

Take And Pass The Exams

Once you’ve successfully completed your program, it’s time to take and pass your exams! You must pass the written exam in order to sit for the practical exam. The fees are $55 for the written exam and $76 for the practical exam.

Written Exam

The following outline is a guide for what you can expect on your written exam! Keep in mind that this will change on September 1, 2023. You can expect to be tested on the following:

  • Licensing and Regulation (10%)
  • Infection Control (37.5%)
  • Eyelash Care (15%)
  • Artificial Eyelashes Application and Removal (37.5%)

Practical Exam

The practical exam is 57 minutes long and a passing score of 70% is required. You can expect to be tested on the following:

  • Pre-Examination Set Up and Disinfection (10 minutes)
  • Eyelash Extension Application (25 minutes)
  • Safety Criteria
  • Blood Exposure Incident (12 minutes)
  • Safety Criteria
  • End of Examination Disinfection (10 minutes)

Apply For Your License

To legally work in Texas, you must apply for a lash tech license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. You can apply here. The application process involves submitting your application and paying a fee.

Now that you’re officially licensed, it’s time to get to work! You can choose to work in a salon or start your own lash extension business! Renew Your License! 

Lash tech licensing is only valid for two years from the date of issue, so be sure to renew your license! Keep in mind that you must complete continuing education requirements as part of your renewal process.
